Calls for Case Studies:

Work Integrated Learning

We’re looking for Case Studies exploring the trials and tribulations, successes and best practice examples of Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunities offered to students within tourism, hospitality, events, and recreation degree programs.

WIL enhances the students’ learning experience and employability by creating an understanding of how the knowledge we teach is relevant to their future careers, a connection that is often hard to establish without practical experience.  Further, academic institutions around the world continue to place emphasis on the development of ‘job ready’ graduates through the mandating of authentic assessment practices that allow students to demonstrate knowledge or skill that is needed to negotiate the requirements of their chosen professions.

 

Tourism Cases provides the perfect platform to host this special edition on WIL given its openness to publish works written by both academics and practitioners. Practitioners play a crucial role in the success of any WIL experience and we welcome submissions that present a combined voice (academic, practitioner, student) on the challenges, triumphs and lessons we can share and learn from in relation to WIL. 

We believe that many of us who teach or participate in WIL in the tourism, hospitality, events, and recreation fields would also welcome case studies that share experiences related to:

  • WIL and developing nations
  • Managing WIL in the COVID era
  • Responding to industry when student performance is low
  • Effective WIL assessment design
  • Issues students face during WIL and how to overcome them
  • WIL and multicultural classrooms
  • Issues faced by those hosting WIL students
  • Examples of effective University support programs for WIL
  • Case studies that demonstrate the link between WIL and employability
  • WIL and student performance

Initial Abstract: Due December 15, 2021

Please send a 200 word abstract outlining your proposed case to the guest editors via email: g.walters@uq.edu.au and n.macionis@uq.edu.au

The guest editors will then invite full submissions from those we believe will make a strong contribution to the special issue based on relevance and fit.

Full Case Study: Due March 31, 2022

If your submission is selected, you will be expected to deliver the full case study by March 31st 2022.

While your Case Study will be subject to peer review, case studies are very different in nature to your typical journal article. The characteristics of CABI’s Tourism Cases are as follows:


  • Tourism Cases are typically between 2000 and 4000 words long, rarely much less or much more, though the potential does exist. The emphasis is on quality rather than length.
  • They are written for serious readers, whether students, teachers, academics, public stakeholders or industry practitioners, in a style that is accessible.
  • They describe a situation or development relating to tourism, leisure, recreation, hospitality or events. They are often written from the point of view of the stakeholders (e.g., academics, students, operators and/or other practitioners involved in WIL).
  • A Tourism Case can stand alone. It generally tells a story, providing enough information to appreciate why the action took place the way it did. It may inspire, but above all it leads the reader to a better understanding of the example and of the principles that it illustrates.

This is a great opportunity to showcase your effective teaching and learning practices in relation to WIL and be a leader in this field. There is no doubt your peers and colleagues and future industry partners will appreciate your valuable insight into how we can enhance student experience and employability.
