This case describes how the Makuleke community reclaimed formal ownership over their land in the Kruger National Park through a land restitution process in South Africa. On the basis that the land could only be used for conservation, the Makuleke formed agreements with private operators to build and operate joint-venture tourism lodges. These generated income, employment and empowered people that had previously been forcibly removed from land by the state.
